Are Photochromic Lenses Right for My Prescription Safety Glasses?

Photochromic lenses are light adaptive lenses that darken when exposed to sunlight. These lenses have been around for decades and now come in a wide array of lens colors and materials.

When paired with prescription safety glasses from SafeVision™, Photochromic lenses can boost your productivity by constantly adapting to all light situations for better vision, comfort and protection from the sun outdoors to harsh indoor artificial lighting.

But are they right for you and your needs?

Photochromic Lenses Are Convenient

If your job requires you to go from indoors to outdoors frequently, Photochromic lenses may be a convenient option for your safety glasses as they will automatically begin to darken when you step outside eliminating the need to carry multiple pairs of safety glasses with you.

Photochromic Lenses Can Meet Your Prescription Needs

Photochromic lenses can easily be paired with your prescription safety glasses to include various lens options, materials and lens types such as bifocals and progressive lenses.

There Are Limitations To Photochromic Lenses

Photochromic lenses are not for everyone. In cases such as being in a vehicle, which often already has UV protection in the windows, the lenses will not darken as much as you would like them to. In cold weather, it will take somewhat longer for the lenses to adapt from dark to clear.

The jury is still out on whether to include Photochromic lenses or not in Spectacle Kits. Many face shields in masks have a UV filter.  If indeed they do, then the Photochromic lenses will not change. As such, we typically do not recommend any type of Photochromic lenses in inserts.
