Emphasizing Eye Health & Safety

As a company that values the health and safety of our eyes, every day, SafeVision employees strive to ask ourselves and others these important questions:

  • Do I protect my eyes while in the sun?
  • Does my workplace provide me with a proper eye safety program?
  • Am I protecting my eyes while I work around the house?

If you answered no to any of these questions, now is the time to take action and adequately protect your eyes from any illness or injury. Here are a few things you should know to understand eye protection and how you can practice eye safety.

UV Protection

During the summer months, the UV radiation is three times higher than in the winter. But direct sunlight combined with reflected sunlight off snow or ice can double the exposure, so if the sun is shining during any season, you should be wearing sunglasses to prevent any injury or even sunburn on your eyes.

When exposed to UV radiation, you increase the risk for eye diseases such as cataracts or age-related macular degeneration. With proper protection and eyewear, you can prevent these diseases.

Wearing sunglasses while exposed to the sun should offer:

  • The ability to absorb and block 99-100% of UVA and UVB light.
  • A sufficient shield for the eyes and eyelids
  • Durability and impact resistance
  • A polarized lens to eliminate glare when near reflective services

Also, while contacts add an extra layer, they won’t fully protect your eyes. Consider both UV protection sunglasses as well as your contacts for full coverage.

Eye Safety

Every year, more than two-million eye injuries occur in the U.S. Out of that two-million, 90% of them are preventable, whether they happen at home or work. To reduce your chances of injury, here ar some safety tips to follow.

Safety Eyewear At Home

When participating in activities at home, such as yard work or DIY projects, be sure to wear protective eyewear. Eyewear can prevent flying debris or common cleaning chemicals from flying or splashing into your eyes.

Protective Eyewear When Playing Sports

For any sport, a pair of safety eyewear exists to keep those playing protected. There is eyewear for sports with a wide range of needs such as fishing, football, golf, cycling, and more. Some have UV protection, while others prevent objects from invading the eye. It’s smart to invest in a pair of eyewear at any age because it will save time and money spent on taking care of the injury.

Protect Children Too

Often, eye injuries for children occur while playing sports. They can also happen from watching adults participate in everyday activities such as yard work or even fireworks on the Fourth of July. Teaching children about eye safety and protecting their own eyes can prevent injuries from an early age. Purchase them protective eyewear too.

Promote Eye Safety at Work

According to OSHA, more than 1,000 eye injuries occur in the American workplace every day. These injuries cost companies more than $300,000 per year. If your company doesn’t have an eye safety program where they identify the hazards and provide workers with proper safety eyewear and training, speak to one of our experts at SafeVision.
